Robert Eugene Unfred

September 18, 1932 — January 31, 2026

Robert Eugene Unfred, a beloved figure in the Grand Junction community and an embodiment of kindness and generosity, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on September 18, 1932, in Grand Junction, Colorado, Robert's life was marked by his deep commitment to family, his outstanding career, and a wealth of cherished memories that will endure in the hearts of those who loved him.

A proud graduate of Fruita Monument High School, Robert went on to serve his country as an Airman 1st Class in the United States Air Force. His dedication during his military service laid the groundwork for the hardworking spirit he carried throughout his life. After returning home, Robert became a master plumber and contractor, making significant contributions to his community by building subdivisions and serving as a plant manager at St. Mary's Hospital. His expertise in his trade earned him respect and admiration, as he was known not only for his skills but also for his warm and inviting demeanor.

Robert's true legacy, however, lies in the love and devotion he shared with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Betty Mae Unfred, who stood by his side through life’s journey. Together, they cultivated a beautiful family, including their son Ron (Lee Ann) Unfred, daughter Trish Tornes (Darrell Robison), and son Kirby (Peri Ann) Unfred. Robert was a doting grandfather to 10 grandchildren, and a proud great-grandfather to 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his big heart.

His siblings, who survive him, include brothers Lloyd (Cathy Rosal) Unfred and Floyd (Maggie) Unfred, and sister Doris Arcieri, who were blessed to share countless moments with Robert over the years. He was the cherished uncle to many, and his extended family often looked up to him as a father or grandfather figure, reflecting the deep affection and esteem in which he was held by all.

Robert created a plethora of joyful memories, one of which was making almond toffee with his family—an experience filled with laughter, love, and boundless sweetness. His interests, which included fishing, gardening, caring for Koi fish ponds, and maintaining vibrant fish aquariums, reflect his deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and the joy of nurturing life. He was a man who took pleasure in the simple things and shared that joy generously.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lorena Unfred, as well as his brother Leland Unfred and sister-in-law Marion. Additionally, he mourned the loss of brother-in-law George Arcieri and niece Donna Arcieri, as well as his beloved granddaughter Jaclyn Rae Unfred. Their spirits will forever be intertwined, as Robert now joins them in celestial harmony.

As we honor Robert’s memory, we celebrate a kind and giving man who touched the lives of many. His big heart, unwavering kindness, and the legacy of love he leaves behind will continue to inspire all who had the fortune of knowing him. Rest in peace, dear Robert. Your warmth will be missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
