Michael D. Matthews

September 3, 1946 — November 29, 2025

Michael Douglas Matthews, 79, of Grand Junction, Colorado passed away on November 29, 2025. He was a cherished husband, brother, friend, stepfather and grandfather.

On September 3, 1946, Mike was born to Virginia and Malvin Matthews in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was raised. He graduated from Valley High School in 1964. He then joined the Army, and after attending OCS at Fort Knox Kentucky, was deployed to serve our country in the Vietnam War. Upon his return home, Mike found his niche in construction and thus began his career. His knowledge and skill in construction led him to become a project superintendent on very large projects with extensive cross-country travel. He was considered the best of the best in his field. Because he was.

1993 would be the year that Mike moved to Colorado, ultimately leading him to meet the love of his life, Maureen Adele Rupe, in Grand Junction. They united in marriage in 1997 and began building their dream. They enjoyed building their beautiful house together, surrounded by extensive flower gardens, large vegetable gardens and acres of surrounding landscape. They endeavored to raise cows and chickens, always sharing the vegetables and lots of eggs. They also created a haven for the birds that they love to watch together.

Mike and Maureen not only enjoyed working outside together but enjoyed traveling. They took many trips to Hawaii, Costa Rica, a recent cruise and many trips to New Mexico to see family and friends. Among Mike’s other passions, hunting and fishing were high on his list. He was always on the go.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Maureen, two brothers, Lynn Matthews and Larry Matthews, stepchildren, Stacey (Dan) Howard, Brent (Misty) Rupe and Brandon Rupe, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mike was loved by many and missed very dearly.
