On May 1 our dear sweet Karen Lucas left our world to join the Lord in
Heaven after battling Alzheimer’s disease for many years. Karen was
born in Craig, CO and moved at a young age to the Grand Valley where
she graduated from Palisade High School. Soon after graduation she
married the love of her life, Dennis Lucas. They were married 58 years
and had two children: Denny and Holly. Karen helped Dennis with their
very successful business for many years before she decided to pursue
her dream.
Karen earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in nursing and then went
to work for St. Mary’s as a neonatal nurse. Karen always wanted to do
more to help women, so she continued her education by obtaining a
master’s degree with honors in counseling from Adams State College.
She then went to work for Latimer House as a counselor after having
previously been a volunteer for over 20 years on Latimer’s hotline,
taking calls in the middle of night. This helped fulfill a calling Karen felt
to help women in need.
Karen touched many lives with her caring, encouraging, and loving
spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who were ever graced by her
presence in their lives including the blessing of having many special
friendships over the years with time spent hiking in the Grand Valley,
traveling, and meeting for coffee. Karen is survived by her husband,
children, and extended family.
Karen’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to all of
Karen’s loving caregivers over the last year. As per Karen’s wishes there
are no public services being held. In lieu of flowers please donate in
her name to the greatest hospice facility in Colorado, Hope West.
