George Leroy Buniger, 75, of Grand Junction, Colorado, passed away on January 25, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
George was born on March 31, 1950, in Grand Junction, Colorado, and was a graduate of Grand Junction High School. He spent much of his life in the area, building a legacy defined by hard work, service, and a deep commitment to family and community.
George proudly served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1969, and served for six years, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. His military service reflected the leadership, discipline, and sense of duty that carried through every aspect of his life.
Following his military service, George worked as a mechanic for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) before starting a cattle ranch in Monticello, Utah. He later returned to Colorado, where he became a diesel mechanic, specializing in school buses. George achieved an ASE Master School Bus Technician certification, and proudly served the students of School District 51, ensuring their safety through his skill, dedication, and attention to detail. He was also known for mentoring young mechanics, generously sharing his knowledge and helping guide their careers. George retired from working on school buses in 2014, leaving behind a standard of excellence and care that endured long after his retirement.
George was always there to help whoever needed it. Among his proudest accomplishments was building a cabin on the Uncompahgre Plateau for his family. In his younger days, George loved racing stock cars at the local track in Grand Junction and later enjoyed mud racing with his family. He was a longtime NASCAR fan and appreciated old cars and historic military vehicles, valuing their craftsmanship and history. George enjoyed riding ATVs and was a founding member of the Western Slope ATV Association. He also enjoyed collecting old coins, rock hunting and searching for treasures in the mountains.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judith L. Buniger; his children, Casey E. Buniger (Holly), Brian E. Graham (Esther), and Amy J. LeMoine (Joseph); his brothers, Clinton F. Buniger Jr. and Clinton J. Buniger; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved and treated as his own children.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Anne Mangan; his father, Clinton F. Buniger Sr.; and his sister, Carolin A. Burch
Services will be held on February 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. George will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
