Fred John Romero, the patriarch of the Romero family andfather figure to many, passed away surrounded by family after an extended illness on January 10, 2026. He was 75 years old.
Freddie’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Victory Life Church in Fruita, Colorado.
Born on May 10, 1950 in Alamosa, Colorado, to the late Felix Romero and the late Maria Romero, Freddie grew up in San Jose, California and La Jara, Colorado. After graduating high school, Freddie worked various jobs, most notably as a bus driver with the Santa Clara County Transit District in San Jose, California.
Freddie married his first wife, Gloria Fulton, and had one son, Dave Romero, in 1973.
Freddie would retire from bus driving in the 1980s to search for Dave, and eventually went on to become a program director and disc jockey at 88.1 KRZA.
There, he met his second wife, and love of his life, Franki Romero, in April 1991. They were married in December 1991, and had two children, Brieanna Smith (Romero) and Donavan Romero.
The family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado in 2001, where Freddie started working at Golden Corral, then at StarTek for around 8 years.
Freddie was reunited with Dave in 2012, meeting five grandchildren along the way.
Freddie also worked at Walmart before retiring in 2010, where he would enjoy time with family, classic rock music, particularly the Beatles, concerts, history documentaries, and science fiction, especially Star Trek.
As the family patriarch, Freddie embodied the spirit of wisdom, mentorship, fatherhood and sacrifice, brightening and enriching the lives of various family members, friends and coworkers. His legacy within his community will live on through those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
Freddie was predeceased by his parents, Felix and Maria Romero, and his brother, Bob Romero.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved and devoted wife of 34 years, Franki Romero; son Dave Romero, daughter Brieanna Smith (Devon), son Donavan Romero (Emily); siblings Victor Romero (Marilyn), Eddie Romero, Cathy Gonzalez, and Bernadette Prolsdorfer (Jim); five grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
